Taking Care of Your Smile During Treatment

Good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is one of the most important things a patient can control. Braces and aligners create areas where food and bacteria can accumulate more easily, and staying on top of cleaning habits protects both the teeth and the gums throughout treatment.

With braces, brush after every meal and floss daily. A fluoride toothpaste is recommended, and your dentist may suggest a fluoride rinse as well. Avoid sticky or chewy foods like caramel, gummy candies, and taffy, which can pull at brackets and wires. Hard foods, including ice, hard candy, and nuts, can damage braces and should be avoided. Continue seeing your general dentist every six months for cleanings. This is especially important while in treatment, since braces can make it harder to clean certain areas thoroughly.

With aligners or a retainer, remove the appliance before eating and drinking anything other than water, brush your teeth before reinserting it, and clean the appliance itself daily with a soft toothbrush. Do not use hot water to clean aligners or retainers, as heat can warp the plastic. Store your appliance in its case whenever it is not in your mouth.

Do I Still Need to See My Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

Yes, and it matters more during treatment than at almost any other time. Braces in particular create additional places for plaque to collect that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush. Regular professional cleanings keep that buildup in check and help prevent cavities and gum problems from developing during treatment. Your dentist and Dr. Rawlins work together to make sure your teeth stay healthy throughout the process.
